During this day camp, I was a leader in training, which meant that I followed the responsibilities below that of a camp counselor. I supervised children while crossing the street and playing sports. I prepared snacks and games. From this experience, I learned professional ways of communicating among children and adults. I learned to be both compassionate and cautious in my tone of voice. I learned that a great counselor is someone who is naturally friendly and optimistic about the future of young children. They also communicate with children as friends and use the same sense of compassion for adults.

As a dance instructor, I instructed students how to follow different group formations, count musical beats, and coordinate movement with music. I practiced movements in front and beside them with and without music. Once students perfected one part of the dance, we added more. I uploaded music and video tutorials online for students to follow at home. I learned that this position requires a lot of alternative teaching, and extra responsibilities such as calling families each week, and measuring students for costumes. From this position, I learned that I enjoy the process of teaching skills that students can apply professionally in their everyday life. I also enjoyed teaching a subject that relates to women’s body issues, physical health and sense of confidence. Cultural dances tend to help bridge these individual concerns with fun activities.

I study at Elohim Academy, which focuses on Middle-Eastern and European history, including Babylon, Persia, Israel and Rome. Aside from the use of textbooks and audiovisual aids, there are 50 subjects that students must present before officially teaching others about religion. Students practice their presentational skills each week, and are tested each month. A passing grade is reliant on group engagement and communication skills. I believe that since I have presented formally at least 6 times, at 20 minute intervals, that I have some experience in a formal teaching setting. After 3 years of attending this academy, I have also conducted one of our presentations at York University through the Elohim Bible Study Club in 2014. Our presentations aim to help people gain an understanding of the bible and history.

At Cardinal Carter, students met weekly to update each other on recent environmental news concerning health, politics, endangered animals, energy and trends. In our first year the club created a board about energy research and tips, ongoing campaigns, and eco-resources. Through this experience I learned that we should have advertised in classes and assemblies and diversified the club to include other student interests such as art, film or theatre. I realized also that starter-club should aim to make a community through group activities instead of setting up grand plans in a short amount of time.

I am currently teaching drawing and painting to a 6 year old girl. Students at this age are familiar with colors and shapes, and are developing their writing skills. In 2 weeks, I taught my student how to mix colors, handle a pencil, shade light and dark, draw curves, facial expressions, and compositions. We have explored painting, drawing and collage techniques. I find that a student will be willing to develop a new and difficult craft if they have a good relationship with their teacher. It is essential to ask questions and provide visual examples for young students who do not know yet how to communicate their feelings or develop their own ideas.

The Longboard living community was organized through a skateboard shop.  Boarders from different shops and districts would meet online and skate around the city bi-weekly. Often, the community would hold gallery events with new boards and video footage from previous routes. This grassroots community taught me that afterschool sports programs can help students also learn about their identity and resources around the city. I think students need to be made aware of how social groups function in order to have proper social expectations before joining a community –whether its for fun or professional experience.

Volunteer/ Non-educational

Lionheart theatre is associated with York university. For the main stage production, “25th annual Putnam Spelling Bee” I was responsible for recording sound and special effects. I also was responsible for choosing, buying, and fixing costumes for a cast of 6-8 people. I supervised the special effects during 4 shows as well. This experience allowed me to use my computer and fashion skills to cater to the individual needs of the cast. I learned that hard work creates a happy working environment but initiative and compassion are needed to maintain professional relationships.

As a production intern, I helped make videos about cultural interests such as filippino food, traditions, phrases, and experiences. I first learned how to set up a camera and lighting system, and then learned how to edit videos and special effects. I also learned how to interact with individuals in order for them to perform comfortably on screen.

As an intern, I needed initiative when working alone but also needed to communicate closely with my supervisors. I also learned that it is important to put a community’s values before one’s own opinions in the workplace. I learned that a group member should work hard but never let it show and that establishing fun relationships with co-workers will increase one’s value in an organization.

Employment

I networked with many working artists my age who often create art installations to advertise their work, and help dress-up event functions. As a volunteer, I enjoyed the process of learning and crafting with like-minded people.

At Anthropologie’s opening store, my responsibilities were to fold and put products in their designated departments. At one busy time, the display windows needed a team to make crafts for a large installation. With instructions but no leader, I attempted to clarify the instructions for a group of new girls, and assigned roles for each one based on their interest. The installation involved painting and gluing pieces of paper together. I acted as a mediator between the construction team outside, and the display team inside who assembled the pieces. I think without my communication skills between the groups, the project would have been disorganized and slow.

At World Class Bakers, I worked as a cashier. My responsibilities were to count cash, assist customers, advertise products, set-up food, clean my station, and wash dishes. I enjoyed working here because the environment was social and interactive. The position involved multi-tasking, which suited me because I like to have a variety of projects on hand.

During a walkathon, I videotaped registrants on Lawrence and Leslie who were walking to raise awareness about homeless issues. It was fun approaching strangers and using conversations to engage them in the event and the video.

I volunteered as a videographer for clean-up campaigns and blood-drives. Compiling footage is important for organizations to remember their members and have personal pride in their achievements.

I was a tour-guide in Markham Museum during an autumn arts exhibition. I engaged visitors in learning about Canadian art and local history. I specifically asked them questions about residential development in the area and how they foresaw future community or arts developments in the area. This exhibition aimed for the community make changes in their local culture through the arts. I enjoyed this internship because I often was responsible for managing groups of children on school tours.

One particular time, I showed students a community garden that was part of the exhibition. The students enjoyed learning about different vegetables and had fun taking some home. I enjoyed teaching new information, engaging visitors with questions, and learning about people in general. I enjoyed learning about the outdoors as well.

I teach drawing and painting to primary students. They learn to identify shapes, lines, and colors. They also learn how to hold a pencil and draw shadows. After learning about colors and techniques, they learn about faces and figures, and apply them to landscapes. They also learn the styles of inspirational artists such as Van Gogh.

I use Excel and MS Office to input current patient data such as blood pressure, injections and health issues. I input data from 200 patients a month and also visit their homes to record blood pressure, height and weight. I enjoy the social aspect of the job and also the office experience.
